It's much easier to act as if critics of Islam have a problem with Muslims as people than it is to accept the uncomfortable truth that Islam is different

Persecution at Medina?

Did the Quraish Threaten
to Kill Medinan Leaders?

From Discover the Truth:

Fleeing persecution and finding a sanctuary in Medina, the Muslims might have thought it to be the end of the persecution and oppression they sustained at the hands of the polytheistic Quraysh in Mecca. But, far from it, the Quraysh became more determined to attack and kill the Muslims down there at Medina. Abdur-Rahman ibn Ka’b ibn Malik reported that the polytheistic leaders of Mecca wrote letters to Abdullah ibn Ubay and other leaders of Medina. That if they wouldn’t drive the Muslims out of Medina, they would come and slaughter everyone there
(January 22. 2016)

What the Apologists Want You to Believe

To make it appear as if the Muslims were still under persecution by the Quraish in Mecca after having migrated to Medina, DTT says that threats were made to the leaders in Medina by the Quraish for having given sanctuary to Muhammad shortly after he arrived.

What They Offer as Proof

This episode is not found in Sahih Bukhari or Sahih Muslim.  However Abu Dawud records the incident as follows:
AbdurRahman ibn Ka'b ibn Malik reported on the authority of a man from among the companions of the Prophet: The infidels of the Quraysh wrote (a letter) to Ibn Ubayy and to those who worshipped idols from al-Aws and al-Khazraj, while the Messenger of Allah was at that time at Medina before the battle of Badr. (They wrote): You gave protection to our companion. We swear by Allah, you should fight him or expel him, or we shall come to you in full force, until we kill your fighters and appropriate your women... (Abu Dawud 2998)
The recipients of the letter responded by gathering to defend themselves (against Muhammad), but Muhammad was able to dispel them by assuring that he meant them no harm (keep this last part in mind).

What They Leave Out and Why They are Wrong

While Discover the Truth appears to cry a river of tears for these polytheistic people at Medina when they allegedly receive a threatening letter, their actual fate isn't mentioned... even though it isn't too hard to find.  In fact, it is referenced further down in the very same verse they cite!

According to the rest of Abu Dawud 2998, the letter received by the Banu Nadir (Jewish tribe) from the Quraish became an excuse for Muhammad to violate the treaty after he attained power.  He had the entire tribe evicted from their homes with only what they could carry.  The rest of their possessions he confiscated for himself.

While DTT gushes about Muhammad's "marvelous example of [how] a great leader... was able in a short speech to bring an end to a civil war happening in the Medinan community", the people of Medina would probably disagree.  He was the civil war.

The fate of the Banu Nadir is better detailed in other sources, but it is ironic that Discover the Truth would use a verse that tells of the eviction and looting of a Medinan host by the Muslims as the best evidence that the Muslims themselves were under persecution.  Clearly, better material couldn't be found.

Although a threatening letter from the Quraish pales in comparison to what the Muslims eventually did to their hosts in Medina, most of the Medinan leaders had made a military alliance with Muhammad against the Quraish.

There is also no indication that the letter came prior to Muhammad's deadly caravan raids (which preceded the Battle of Badr).  If Quraish merchants were being slaughtered and/or robbed by Muhammad, then a threatening letter to those sheltering him would hardly be inappropriate.
